Memorial Day Reflection from En-Joy Ministries

This Memorial Day, we pause with grateful hearts to remember and honor those who gave everything so we could live in freedom.

My great-grandfather was a WWII veteran who enlisted in the Army before the war even began and served long after it ended. He cherished gathering with family on Memorial Day and the Fourth of July—joyful, deeply thankful to be present, yet carrying a quiet somberness. One year, as the fireworks began at dusk, I saw him slip inside. When I asked why, he simply said, “I’ve seen enough fireworks in my life… in the war.” His words still echo. They remind us that true freedom isn’t free—it was purchased with blood, courage, and unimaginable sacrifice.

Today we remember not only the veterans who returned, but especially those who did not. We honor the men and women who laid down their lives for this nation. And as followers of Christ, we also remember the faithful martyrs who gave their lives for the Gospel—those who loved not their lives even unto death (Revelation 12:11).

Jesus said it best:
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13)

On this day, may we hold both sorrow and joy in tension—just as my great-grandfather did. Thankful for every sacrifice that secured our liberties, and eternally grateful for the cross where Jesus secured our souls.Let us live worthy of their legacy: with joy, with purpose, and with unwavering faith.

Freedom isn’t free. Grace isn’t cheap. Both call us to remember.— En-Joy MinistriesHonoring the fallen. Celebrating the risen King.
