Time, Music, and the Unseen Reality of Faith

by Pastor Barron Greenwalt

Have you ever considered that time itself is invisible, yet no one doubts it exists?
You cannot see time, touch time, or put it under a microscope, but you feel its rhythm in every heartbeat, every song, every sunrise. Music proves time’s reality—notes, rests, beats, and measures all demand sequence and duration. Without time, there is no melody, no harmony, no worship.

And the Bible tells us there is music in heaven—harps, trumpets, new songs before the throne (Rev 5:8-9; 14:2-3; 15:2-3). That means heaven is not a static, frozen “eternity” with no movement or progression. Eternity is not the absence of time; it is time fulfilled, time without decay, time ruled by the Lamb who sits on the throne “forever and ever” (Rev 11:15). Even in the age to come, there will be sequence, celebration, and ever-unfolding joy. Time, in its redeemed form, will still be there—only now perfectly submitted to Christ.

Now carry that thought one step further with me.

The writer of Hebrews declares that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Heb 11:1).

The Greek word translated “substance” is hypostasis—a word used in ancient property documents for the title deed, the actual legal guarantee that the property is yours. It means that which stands under, the real foundation, the substantial reality. In other words, faith is not wishful thinking. Faith is a spiritual material, a real entity in the unseen realm, just as real as gravity or electromagnetic fields are in the seen realm.

Modern physics has already taught us that reality is far bigger than what our five senses can detect.

  • We live in three spatial dimensions, but string theory and M-theory propose up to 10 or 11 dimensions—most of them “curled up” so small we cannot perceive them.
  • Quantum fields permeate empty space; particles pop in and out of existence; entanglement connects things faster than light—yet all of this is invisible until measured.
  • Time itself is a created dimension, woven into the fabric of spacetime by God on Day One when He said, “Let there be light,” and the ages began to unfold.

Since scientists can speak confidently about dark matter, dark energy, extra dimensions, and quantum fields that we cannot see yet know are real because of their measurable effects, then why do we hesitate to believe the Bible when it tells us there are principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness, and spiritual wickedness in the heavenly places (Eph 6:12)?

The spiritual realm is not “less real” than the physical; Scripture says it is more real, the control room behind the visible stage. And in that realm, faith is a tangible substance. When you believe God, something actual is deposited in the unseen world. It has weight. It has standing. It moves mountains because it is already connected to the dimension where God’s throne is.

Think of it this way:
Just as a musician plays notes in time that produce beauty in the air, so the believer releases faith in the Spirit that produces miracles in history. The rhythm of heaven—worship that never ends—already pulses in the eternal now, and our faith is the downbeat that synchronizes earth with that greater music.

So, when you feel weak in faith, remember:

  • You are not trying to manufacture a feeling.
  • You are laying hold of a real substance that already exists in the unseen realm, a substance authored and finished by Jesus Himself (Heb 12:2).
  • That substance is as real as the extra dimensions physicists search for, as real as the time that orders every song in heaven.

Therefore, keep believing. Keep declaring. Keep worshiping.

Your faith is not thin air—it is the very bridge between the seen and the unseen, the title deed to promises that eye has not seen nor ear heard, but that God has prepared for those who love Him.

The music is already playing in heaven.
By faith, step into the rhythm.

Walking in the substance of things hoped for,

  1. A quick note from Pastor Barron: When I said “our faith is the downbeat that synchronizes earth with that greater music,” I simply meant this – heaven is already filled with perfect, never-ending worship, like a glorious song that’s constantly playing. The “downbeat” is that strong first beat in a measure of music (the “1” when you count 1-2-3-4) that everything locks into. Faith is our strong, decisive “1” – the moment we believe God and suddenly earth falls in step with what heaven is already doing. It’s the click that lines us up with God’s eternal rhythm! Hope that helps the picture come alive. Keep stepping into the music, friends!
