The Hidden Dangers Behind Closed Doors: Child Welfare Issues

As many of you know, my business works with HUD, the Department of Housing and Urban Development. I’m often the first person on-site to assess and inspect homes that have gone through forbearance, foreclosure, or default, especially those with home equity conversion mortgages. Over the years, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve found a hasp and padlock on a child’s bedroom door. You can tell it’s a child’s room from the toys left behind, the crayon marks on the walls, or other telltale signs. But why are these doors equipped with hasps and padlocks? For nearly 11 years, I’ve reported these findings, provided photo documentation, and yet nothing—absolutely nothing—has been done about it.

What’s even more disturbing is that in almost every case, neighbors approach me with questions like, “What did you see in there?” or “Did you find any pets?” Too often, I’ve entered these homes and discovered pets abandoned and dead. I’ll never forget a neighbor once telling me, “I kept hearing the dogs bark for days, but then they stopped. I just assumed someone came and got them.” In every instance, the neighbors did nothing.

I’m telling you, we’re surrounded by people who abuse children and commit unspeakable acts. If child abuse statistics are rising—and they are—and so many kids are affected, it’s clear that adults are responsible. That means a staggering number of offenders are out there, living among us. For years, I’ve been saying there’s a worldwide sex trafficking ring, and many of the faces we see on TV are complicit. When are we going to have the guts to act? Trump warned us that children are being trafficked back and forth across our border—people called him a liar. Say what you will, but this man is doing more for humanity than anyone else in our lifetime.
