Seeing Through the Spectacle of Corruption

Dear En-Joy Ministries Family,

As a pastor, I’m compelled to speak truth in love, guided by God’s Word, about the corruption that plagues our institutions, including our judiciary. Scripture warns us in Micah 3:11, “Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets tell fortunes for money.” From the days of Jesus to today, those in power, whether in Congress, the courts, or any level of government, often enrich themselves at the expense of justice. Today, I want us to examine the recent public spat between Supreme Court Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Ketanji Brown Jackson. Is it a genuine clash of principles, or is there more beneath the surface? Let’s seek discernment together.

The Bible shows us this is nothing new. In 1 Samuel 8:3, Samuel’s sons “turned aside after dishonest gain and accepted bribes and perverted justice.” Jesus Himself called out the Pharisees, who “loved money” and neglected true righteousness (Luke 16:14). These warnings echo in our time, where leaders often prioritize personal gain over public good. Consider the recent Supreme Court case Trump v. CASA (June 27, 2025), where Justice Barrett, in the majority opinion, limited judges’ power to issue nationwide injunctions, while Justice Jackson dissented fiercely, calling the ruling a threat to the rule of law. Barrett sharply rebuked Jackson’s dissent as “extreme,” fueling public attention.

But let’s pause and ask: Is this dispute truly about principle, or is it a spectacle designed to draw eyes? Both justices have secured massive book deals with the same publisher, Penguin Random House. Financial disclosures show Jackson earned over $2 million for her 2024 memoir, Lovely One, and Barrett received a $2 million advance for her upcoming book. Same publisher, same timing, same multimillion-dollar stakes. Coincidence? I don’t believe so. This public clash feels like a calculated move to boost their profiles and book sales, much like we’ve seen with other public figures. Look at Congress, where lawmakers like Nancy Pelosi have faced scrutiny for insider trading, or high-profile figures like the Obamas, who’ve turned public service into multimillion-dollar book deals. It’s a pattern that makes us question who our leaders truly serve.

As believers, we’re called to discern truth. Proverbs 29:4 reminds us, “By justice a king gives a country stability, but those who are greedy for bribes tear it down.” The Barrett-Jackson spectacle, paired with their book deals, should prompt us to pray for wisdom and hold our leaders accountable. We cannot judge their hearts—only God can (1 Samuel 16:7)—but we can see the fruit of their actions. Let’s pray they seek justice over profit and that we, too, prioritize God’s kingdom over worldly gain.

Let’s Pray Together
Lord, we lift up Justices Barrett and Jackson and all in authority. Expose any schemes that undermine Your justice and give us discernment to see truth clearly. May we walk in righteousness, trusting You to guide our nation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

In His service,
Pastor Barron Greenwalt
