Building Up Our Spiritual Reservoirs
Our spiritual reservoirs need constant building up, and one of the most effective ways to achieve this is by praying in the Spirit. As Jude 20 advises, “But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit.” The presence and work of the Holy Spirit are beneficial and central to our prayer life.
One profound way to engage with the Holy Spirit in prayer is by using the prayer language He provides—speaking in tongues. According to 1 Corinthians 14:4, “Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves,” meaning that when we pray in tongues, we are essentially building up our spiritual selves. This practice:
- Edifies: It strengthens our spiritual core, much like physical exercise fortifies our bodies.
- Builds Spiritual Defenses: Praying in the Spirit fortifies our spiritual armor, equipping us to withstand the challenges and temptations we face daily.
- Empowers: It connects us more deeply with the divine, enhancing our spiritual sensitivity and readiness to act according to God’s will.
By praying in the Spirit, we invite the Holy Spirit to intercede on our behalf, often in ways that go beyond our understanding or current needs, as Romans 8:26 suggests. This form of prayer is not just about speaking; it’s about opening ourselves up to the transformative power of the Holy Spirit, allowing Him to work within us to strengthen, guide, and renew our faith.
Thus, praying in the Spirit is engaging in a dynamic, empowering spiritual exercise that fortifies our faith, deepens our relationship with God, and equips us to stand firm in our spiritual journey.
