The Light of the World

Jesus said, “You are the light of the world.” Consider the qualities of light:

  • A light reveals things as they are.
  • Light gives guidance and direction.

Sin blinds people to reality, but the Truth sets people free. As God’s messengers in the world, we are to communicate that liberating truth.

When Jesus described the last days, He repeatedly warned His followers not to be deceived (Matthew 24, 25; Luke 21). In current culture, deception abounds. Conventional wisdom distorts.

24:4 And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you.

(Regarding Matthw 24:4-14) In warning the disciples against false signs, Jesus sketches the prevailing conditions of their present age down to the very end and states their continuing task. There will be religious deception, social and political upheavals, natural disasters, disloyalty, and persecution – all of which are precursors of the end times. Amid the difficulties, the Lord’s followers are to preserve in spreading the gospel.

Jesus said that a lamp on a stand gives light to all who are in the house, and a city set on a hill cannot be hidden. The church should be visible in the community as a testimony of truth and right living.

The lost of this world are searching. They are blind because of sin and do not really know what they are searching for, but they are searching. The answer—Jesus Christ, the Redeemer of mankind and Savior of the world. To a world that is lost and wandering in sin, we are to show them the way to forgiveness, reconciliation with God, and everlasting life.

Matthew 5:16: “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” Still, the Spirit of God had given him the desire to bless others rather than serve himself. He was a testimony of what a Christian should be—a giver of light to those who are in spiritual darkness.

Recognize that your life has either a positive or negative effect. Live responsibly to bring glory to God.
