Read God’s Word. The book that He has given us to guide our lives. What He has for us will be discovered as we spend time in His Word. Ask this question: “How does this passage, this truth, this command, or this promise apply to your life right now?”
Pray honestly. Ask God to guide and direct. Real prayer is the kind that gives us insight into God’s plan and purpose. This includes listening quietly, meditating on scripture, and sifting through the thoughts and emotions that pass through our minds; asking the Holy Spirit to help us discern the ones that come from Him. I don’t know how much of this prayer you have done, but we all need to learn to do more of it.
Check your impressions and ideas about what God might be saying to you, and with others in the Body of Christ. That is others in the body of Christ whose maturity and discernment you recognize as coming from God. Having others around, whom you trust in their Godly counsel, that you trust to help you filter out spiritual and psychological noise from the communicator of the Spirit of God, is crucial. If you don’t have such people, pray they come into your life.
Earnestly pray that He will open and shut doors so your life is protected from walking through the wrong doors and directed through the right ones. Remember Proverbs: A man’s heart devises his way, but the Lord directs his steps. That means God is sovereign. He is in control and can correct your misunderstanding, shutting doors if they are wrong and confirming with other doors that are wide open.
