Spiritual death and its implications

Apart from physical death, Scripture speaks of a second type of death. This is known as spiritual death.

  • Spiritual Death
    • Spiritual death is when a person is alive physically, but dead spiritually. All of us are born spiritually dead, separated from God. The Lord said to Adam.

But you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die (Genesis 2:17).

Adam and Eve died spiritually at the time that they sinned – they became different beings than the ones God had originally created They also began to die physically.

  • Separated By Nature
    • Humanity is now separated from God by nature. Jesus said.

Very truly, I tell you, anyone, who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life, and does not come under judgment, but has passed from death to life (John 5:24).

  • Were Dead: Man does not merely need a guide or a teacher; he is spiritually and morally dead and needs someone able to resurrect his spirit and transform his moral essence.

Not only is humanity separated from God by nature, but humans are also hostile to Him. The Apostle Paul spoke of believers in the following way.

And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins in which you once lived, following the course of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient. All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and senses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like everyone else

(Ephesians 2:1-3). These believers had been spiritually dead in their trespasses and sin.

(2:2) (Commentary) The mood and manner of society are shaped by the “prince of the power of the air, a title for Satan as he exercises influence globally and within each culture.

  • Died Spiritually
    • Paul wrote about being spiritually dead.

Once I was alive apart from law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life, and I died (Romans 7:9). V.10 And the commandment, which was to bring life, I found to bring death

  • Realization of sin through the means of the law makes one conscious of his spiritual death.
  • The Law was instituted so that it might give life to those who were under it and who kept it. They did not keep it, and therefore it brought them not life but death.
  • That perfect standard showed how wrong his heart and life were, proving his sins to be more numerous than he had before thought
  • Result Of Sin
    • The reason we are all born spiritually dead has to do with sin. We receive our fallen nature from our parents. After Adam and Eve sinned, the death sentence was pronounced. All other humans have been born with their sinful nature (the exception to this was the Lord Jesus who was born without sin). Therefore, each of us comes into the world spiritually separated from God. All of us are born spiritually dead or separated from God. This is because all of us have inherited the sinful nature from Adam and Eve.

Creation, incarnation, and the cross share essential connections. They are tied together by God in a strategic and supportive way. To understand Jesus’s birth and death, you have to understand Adam’s creation and fall.

This was the Call to Worship on 2022-07-24

We need to be holy and just people, to pursue Holiness and, hence, the reference in the song we are about to sing “to the ‘days of your servant Moses” – meaning that righteousness and right living are important in all our attitudes and works. David, the psalmist in the Bible, was used by God to introduce worship, praise, and thanksgiving into the temple.

And these are the days of Your servant Moses righteousness being restored

Romans 5:19

19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

A Summary of God’s plan of representative heads for the human race. Adam sinned (once), and all whom Adam represented were found guilty., Christ obeyed (through His whole life) and all whom Christ represented will be made righteous. Some object to this idea of representative heads for the human race. But if we do not think it fair that we were counted guilty for Adam’s sin, then we should not think it fair that we are counted righteous for Christ’s obedience.

As we go into worship, let us think about growing in godliness and what Romans teaches us, that through Jesus, we have received abundant grace and the gift of righteousness. This grace does not give us a license to sin but grants us the freedom to live and grow in godliness. Love, humility, and unity are to motivate godly living. Godliness prefers others, does not abuse freedom, and honors others in the body of Christ. Let grace reign in your life through godly living. God is holy and he expects us to reflect that holiness and purity.
